Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is committed to providing members with the information and care they need when they need it. As changes to anesthesiology coverage have recently been announced by another Blue Cross and Blue Shield-licensed health plan, this may lead to confusion or uncertainty for our BCBSM and Blue Care Network of Michigan members. As an anesthesiologist, myself, and Chief Medical Officer, I want to assure members that there will be no changes to anesthesiology coverage for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan members. Anesthesia services that are currently paid for by the procedure and time of the procedure will continue. This also means the end point of anesthesia care will remain the same- when a patient has been safely transferred to a post anesthesia care unit like a recovery room or intensive care unit.
Anesthesia is a critical part of many medical procedures, and we prioritize the needs of our members by following best practices informed by experienced physicians and advanced practice providers who understand the complexities of safe, high quality anesthesia care and the unique needs of each patient. These practices are rooted in years of clinical experience and evidence-based medicine, ensuring our members receive safe, high quality and effective care.
To be clear, our policies for coverage related to in-network anesthesiology services will remain consistent with current policies and there will be no cap based on time. There will be no reduction in access to necessary anesthesia care per the terms of member plans.
