There are certain tasks you know you need to do before traveling, like fill the car up with gas, lower the heat in your house and stock up on things to keep your kids entertained. But when you list your pre-trip to-dos, don’t forget about preparing for any health-related issues. Whether you’re going to Petoskey, Pittsburgh or Peru, taking a few precautions before a trip can ensure that you and your family are covered:
- Count your pills. Check how much of any prescription medications you have and get a refill if necessary before you go. It will be one less thing for you to worry about on vacation. If you do run out mid-trip, don’t worry: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan members have access to more than 60,000 partner pharmacies across the country.
- If you’re traveling abroad, look into traveler’s insurance. These kinds of plans pick up where your normal health plan leaves off—helping you get covered if you need to see a doctor in another country, get a prescription or even get evacuated (the type of coverage depends on the plan you go with). This is especially helpful if you have a chronic condition since it can ensure you’ll get the help you need if something arises. Blue Cross members should sign up through the BlueCard Worldwide program to get health coverage that goes with them.
- Be prepared for TSA screenings. If you are flying to your destination and have to bring prescriptions or have a medical device, check the TSA guidelines. Prescriptions should be in their original packaging and let the TSA officer know if you have liquid medication (they don’t count towards your allowed liquid amount). You should also bring up medical devices like implants, pacemakers and defibrillators.
- Stock your car with a medical kit. Before you set off on a road trip, store a simple first aid kit in the car. Include items like bandages, antiseptics, aspirin, hydrocortisone, gauze pads and tweezers.
