After more than 40 years in medicine, Dr. James Grant reflects on a career that has encompassed not only medical advancements, but also the privilege of caring for thousands of patients and helping shape the future of healthcare. In a recent episode of the "A Healthier Michigan Podcast," Grant, chief medical officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, shared insights on his journey and the lessons he hopes to leave for the next generation of medical professionals.
Grant’s path began with a calling to help people, which evolved through the decades into a broader responsibility — serving patients, leading colleagues and working to improve the healthcare system itself. His career spanned direct patient care, department leadership and high-level administration, all while maintaining a patient-focused perspective.
"Whether you’re helping one person in the operating room or making decisions that impact six million members, it’s about making a difference," Grant said.
He emphasized that medicine is both rewarding and challenging. Transitioning from hands-on care to administrative leadership, Grant saw the importance of bridging the gap between payers and providers. He believes that both sides share a common goal: delivering accessible, high-quality care. Bringing the clinician’s viewpoint to the executive table, he worked to ensure that healthcare decisions benefit both patients and practitioners.
Grant also discussed the evolving landscape of healthcare, from advances in technology — such as robotic surgery that now allows for outpatient procedures — to the growing emphasis on preventive care and health span, not just lifespan. He urged listeners to focus on healthy habits at any age, noting it’s never too late to improve one’s health.
"We only get one body. We just have to do everything we can to make it work right," he said.
Looking ahead, Grant plans to stay engaged in healthcare, seeking out opportunities to fix what he sees as broken in the system. He encourages open-mindedness and adaptability, reminding others that career paths are rarely linear. As he embarks on his "rewirement," Grant remains committed to helping others, whether through mentoring, consulting or simply guiding friends through the complexities of the healthcare system.
