Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has built an 84-year legacy as a trusted health insurance brand and health care partner to our members and communities by providing access to high-quality, affordable and appropriate care wherever and whenever it’s needed.
This continued in 2022 and throughout the pandemic as we provided a wide range of resources to keep members and communities healthy amid unprecedented challenges. To keep the health care ecosystem moving for all of our stakeholders, we pay an average of $80 million a day in claims and benefits to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and other providers of care. To support members and customers facing COVID-19, we committed $739 million for testing, treatment and vaccine administration. To address the rising need of comprehensive mental health services for members, we expanded access to virtual care and enhanced our focus on whole-person health.
Expanding access to high-quality care
At the same time, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan continued to take a more active role in how health care is delivered and accessed. This includes working with physicians to increase access for residents in underserved areas and enhancing support for members who need integrated in-home care.
Through a variety of longstanding initiatives, we are also focused on improving the health and well-being of all Michiganders. Our safety-net grants support people who are uninsured or underinsured. Our ongoing commitment to protect vulnerable Michiganders through the historic Michigan Health Endowment Fund continued with a $100 million payment in 2022. We’ve also developed a robust health equity strategy that spans primary care access and quality, health promotion, behavioral health, maternal health and addressing the social determinants of health to understand where gaps exist.
Always ready to help
Altogether, our work in 2022 reflects the tremendous dedication and passion that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan employees have to continue fulfilling our historic commitments to the millions of people who count on us. I am proud that even through the challenges of the public health emergency, we continued to evolve and strengthen our company for our members and communities – ensuring that we are always ready to help.
