Free Asthma Education, Screenings at Healthy Hoops® Event Oct. 22

Washtenaw County residents are invited to attend a free event that teaches children, ages 3 to 16, and their families how to better understand and effectively manage asthma and associated conditions, learn about and maintain a healthy diet, undertake safe physical activities and improve their overall quality of life. Blue Cross Complete of Michigan and AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership are bringing their award-winning Healthy Hoops® program to Ypsilanti High School on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature asthma control testing, action plan consultations, spacer and inhaler demonstrations, as well as interactive basketball clinics featuring former Detroit Piston Jermaine Jackson. Current Detroit Pistons players Tobias Harris and Boban Marjanovic will also be in attendance. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reports that Washtenaw County’s prevalence of persistent asthma for children on Medicaid in 2013 was 7.4 percent, much higher than most counties in Michigan. Teaching children and their families how to manage asthma is one of the most important parts of controlling the disease. Everyone with asthma should develop an individualized asthma action plan with their doctor. For complete details on the event, see the flyer below.
