Renaissance Center to Go Turquoise in Support of National Women’s Lung Week

The Renaissance Center building is one of many Detroit landmarks that will shine turquoise May 12-18 in support of National Women’s Lung Health Week. Each year the American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE works with landmarks and buildings across the U.S. to turn turquoise to honor those living with and affected by lung cancer. Blue Cross lobbied to add the Renaissance Center to the list of landmarks this year. Other notable locations include Ford Field, the Motor City Casino & Hotel, One Campus Martius, the Federal Reserve and more. "BCBSM is a proud supporter of the efforts raised by the ALA and is thankful to help spread the message of strength and determination to lead the fight against lung cancer,” said Community Responsibility Director Suzanne Miller Allen, who worked with the American Lung Association to light the Renaissance Center. According to the American Lung Association, every two and a half minutes someone in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths for both women and men. It's estimated that 8,780 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, with 5,680 dying of the disease. The rate of new lung cancer cases has almost doubled in women in the last 40 years.
