At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, we commit to being trusted partners for our members by providing affordable, innovative products that improve their care and health — no matter the circumstances.
While the market and our industry experienced numerous challenges in 2023, we continued to adapt and rise to the occasion, just as we’ve done for 85 years and will continue to do in the years to come.
Evolving
This past year demonstrated the importance of the strong foundation we have built through growth and diversification. It has allowed us to continue evolving to remain the most preferred health plan in Michigan, and we will continue to provide support well into the future.
We are driven to deliver health care experiences that are more personalized and value-based; we are innovating to offer health solutions that incorporate both body and mind while offering more options for quality and affordable care through value-based networks and enhanced digital platforms.
Partnering
BCBSM is leading the way to revolutionize how care is delivered and partnering with providers to share accountability for cost and outcomes. We are entering the 20th year of Value Partnerships, a collection of programs among BCBSM, physicians and hospitals across Michigan that have reshaped the way health care is delivered and redefined how we pay for health care — moving reimbursement to a value-based model that pays for quality and outcomes.
A milestone in 2023 was welcoming Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont to our family of companies. Together, we embarked on a pioneering model for how nonprofit, single-state Blue Cross companies can formally collaborate while remaining locally based.
Inclusive culture
A key component of our company’s strength is our inclusive culture. For more than 15 years, we have fostered a culture that supports inclusion and diversity and reflects the communities we serve.
We offer employees numerous pathways for professional support, growth and development. And we continue to build on our robust health equity strategy, which spans primary care access and quality, health promotion, behavioral health, maternal health and addressing the social determinants of health to understand where gaps exist.
Our members, our mission
At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, our members guide us and inspire us — they are the reason our company exists. Providing the very best experiences adds to our legacy as a trusted health insurance brand and health care partner that provides access to high-quality, affordable and appropriate care wherever and whenever it’s needed. That continued in 2023, even as our industry experienced unprecedented change.
I am grateful and honored to have led this company as President and CEO from 2006 through 2024. It’s been the best job that I’ve ever had — and it’s been an honor to serve our members and communities.
