Attending a professional baseball game is one thing, but being able to get up close and personal with players on the field? Now that’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Every Sunday home game at Comerica Park, selected participants get to take the starting nine positions on-field as a part of Kids Take the Field experience, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. On July 8th, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan partnered with community partners and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint to award this opportunity to eleven lucky kids.
Bre’Azia Lee, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint Bre'Azia Lee was one of the children that got to be a part of it. She got to meet Tigers center fielder, Mikie Mahtook. “I’ve been to baseball games before but never been on the field,” commented Lee. “My favorite part was getting the baseball from the player and shaking hands with them.” In addition to Lee, 10 other kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Flint got to participate. Moments before the game started, some were sent to a position on the field, shook hands with their player and received a signed baseball. Another was an honorary PA announcer and one got to meet the managers and coaches during the line-up card exchange. The looks on the kids’ faces was that of pure joy. Most people never get to step nearly that close to a professional sports player but these kids got a firsthand encounter. After exiting the field, everyone, including the chaperones, got to enjoy the remainder of the game from their seats and enjoy a fun-filled day courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Flint provides programs that are designed to benefit children socially, physically, economically and educationally, building a foundation for future successes personally, and leading to a positive future for Flint and Genesee County.
